Abstract
The Japanese B. Encephalitis(JE) was recognized for the first time from American soldier in 1946, but there is considerable difficulty in determining the time when this virus began its ravages in Korea.
The JE became one of the most important communicable disease in Korea since 1949, because there were 5,616 cases with 2,727 deaths in 1949 and the JE Virus was confirmed among them.
Since then, JE has become an important problem of public health field especially in rural areas where mortality rate is still high due to under reporting or hidden `cases which resulted by the superstition and a kind of prohibiting custom to get a modern medical treatment.
This report will present the data on serum and sequela which was examined from the onset of JE until after one and half year of convalescent of same cases occurred in Namwon-Gun, Cholla-puk Do from 1967 to 1969.
The author surveyed on J. E cases occurred in Namwon-Gun, where the highest morbidity rate showed among Cholla.-puk Do area in 1967.
Summary.
1. The morbidity rate including suspected cases per 100, 000 population was 69. 5, and that of under 15 years of age group was 274.7.
2. JE positive cases was 16.6 per 100,000 population, and 63.7 for under 15 years of age group
3. Case fatality rate was 27.6 for total.
4. Seasonal distribution showed that between mid August and mid September was the main epidemic period.
5. The JE positive rate for the total cases was 31.6 percent, and the highest percentage could be found arrange 5-9 year group.
6. The antibody level for the period of acute stage was 1:22.8, and the level increased thereafter
becoming 1:49.8 at the period of convalescent, but decreased to 1:30.2 after one and half year of convalescent.
7. Frequency of sequela was showed high occurrence in delayed treatment and needed long-term-treatment patients. After one and half year the result of survey on the rate of sequela of JE was 72.7 percent for the average of all age group and showed high rate in 5-9 years old age group.
10, Regarding the neurologic symptoms pyramidal tract signs was 50.0% of the tops, 43.8% for extraphyramidal tract, 25.0% for speech disturbance and 18.8% for sensory disturbance and so forth.
